About Us

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

we are the voice of northern Iceland, committed to delivering truthful, relevant journalism that reflects the unique concerns, triumphs, and character of our communities. We pledge to illuminate the stories that matter most to our region while upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Through thoughtful reporting and unwavering dedication to our readers, we aim to strengthen the bonds between northern communities and ensure their perspectives are heard throughout Iceland and beyond.

Our Story

Norðurfréttir ("Northern News") was founded in 1952 by schoolteacher Björn Sigurðsson in Akureyri when he grew frustrated with the lack of reliable information reaching Iceland's northern communities. With just an old printing press and a team of three dedicated locals, they published their first edition from the back room of Sigurðsson's home. The newspaper gained national recognition after their exceptional coverage of devastating winter storms in 1963, when reporters traveled on horseback between isolated communities.

Under the leadership of Sigurðsson's daughter Margrét, who became Editor-in-Chief in 1978, the newspaper embraced technological innovations earlier than competitors, including being the first regional newspaper to launch a website in 1996. Today, with forty journalists and an international digital subscription base, Norðurfréttir remains true to its founding principle: telling the stories that matter to northern communities. From its humble beginnings to its position as a respected national publication, it stands as a testament to the power of local journalism and the importance of regional voices.
